End of term 3 - Instructional writing

For the last 2 weeks of term we have been working instructional writing. We have been focussing on adding advanced features to our instructions. These include:
  • Use of adverbial clauses (if, so, that, otherwise) to indicate reason and time (when, after) e.g. Line the tin with paper so that it doesn’t stick
  • Use of varying levels of modality to make meanings stronger weaker e.g. could, should, might, like. " Should the cake burn, put heavy icing on it."
  • Use of beginning clauses to focus attention e.g. “After an hour check on the cake, it should be golden brown. "
  • The use of conditional forms to indicate potential choices. E.g. "To make the cake tastier add 75g of raisins."
  • Adding reasons for actions e.g. "Put the cake mixture in a square tin as it is easier to share a square cake."
  • Consider different ways of giving commands, e.g. As an offer or an order
  • Adjectives add details relating to size e.g. "A cake tin with a diameter of 15cm"
  • Present tense
  • Imperative (action) verbs e..g take, mix, bake, get, melt, sit, stir, kneed, glue
  • Vocab ranges from precise technical to everyday language.
Have a look at some of the delicious things we created and wrote instructions for.

  1. Sweet Pizza
    Ingredients
    • Chocolate sauce
    • Pizza bases
    • Marsh mellows
    • Pineapple lumps
    • M&ms
    • Sprinkles
    Steps
    1. Line the tray 25cm by 25cm in diameter with baking paper so it doesn’t stick and put carefully on the tray
    2. Heat the pizza base in the oven for 10-15 minutes ( this is so you don’t completely melt the lollies)
    3. Prepare the ingredients e.g.; cut up lollies and heat chocolate sauce.
    4. When it’s warm take it out carefully and put it on a plate
    5. Spread chocolate sauce over base ( you could you jam if you don’t have any chocolate sauce) use extra if base burns
    6. Cover base with around a cup full of lollies ( add fruit here for a healthier option)
    7. Drizzle chocolate sauce over top[
    8. Sprinkle drops and sprinkles over top
    9. Heat in oven for 1-2 minutes at 180 degrees
