  3. Hey,
Matariki is 7 sisters in the sky and there are many legends on what they are.
I know that the sisters can tell stories and things, and they represtent the Maori new year.
These stars used to tell the Maori what stocks are going to be high this year. The stars can say that the food from the sea will have high stock or the plants ect.
What did everyone else find out?

  4. Hey,
Matariki is the Maori name for the group of stars also known as the Pleiades star cluster or The Seven Sisters; and what is referred to as the traditional Maori New Year.

The Maori culture celebrates it in late May or early June.

Matariki has two meanings, both referring to a tiny constellation of stars; Mata Riki (Tiny Eyes) and Mata Ariki (Eyes of God).

Matariki, or Maori New Year celebrations, were once popular, but stopped in the 1940s. In 2000 they were revived.
    How is Matariki celebrated?

I know that matariki is a celebration.A celebration of what?.Matariki is a celebration of people, culture, language, spirituality and historyWhat did they eat?.Kereru (wood pigeon),having feasted on native berries, were snared and preserved in fat during Matariki. This practice gave rise to the proverb When Matariki is seen the fat is cooked.Matariki was a time to prepare the Whenua (land) in anticipation of spring and to plant certain vegetables to appease the land based gods Rongo,Uenuku and Whiro.

  9. Hey everyone,
Matariki is a Maori word that can be translated as tiny eyes, or eyes of God. It is also the name for the Maori New Year celebration and the Maori name for group of 7 stars also known as the Pleiades that drop below the horizon in April and reappear in June. When this happens, it is the signal for the Maori New Year to start.

Early Maori sailors used these stars to help them find their way.

  11. Hi guys!
All I know is that matariki is group of seven stars which symolises the moari new year? I don't know if it's accurate.
I don't know anything about how they celebrate Matariki. This is what I found out about Matariki on this website.
    http://www.taitokerau.co.nz/matariki.htm
Matariki is celebrated with education, remembrance and the planting of new trees and crops signalling new beginnings. Matariki was the optimum time for new harvests, and ceremonial offerings to the land-based gods Rongo, Uenuku and Whiro to ensure good crops for the coming year. It was also seen as a perfect time to learn about the land we live on and to remember whakapapa (ancestry) who have passed from this world to the next and the legacy they left behind.
I don't know what it means but thats what I found out.

  12. Matariki, The Seven Sisters or Messier 45 is a group of stars north-east of New Zealand. It occurs at the end of harvest season. At Matariki, Maoris stocked up on food for the winter season. Maoris believe that the visibility of the Matariki star cluster represents the oncoming weather.

That is my knowledge of Matariki.

This is what i found about matariki
    The website is called http://www.taitokerau.co.nz/matariki.htm

Matariki is the Maori name for the group of stars also known as the Pleiades star cluster or The Seven Sisters; and what is referred to as the traditional Maori New Year.

When is the Maori New Year?
The Maori new year is marked by the rise of Matariki and the sighting of the next new moon. The pre-dawn rise of Matariki can be seen in the last few days of May every year and the new year is marked at the sighting of the next new moon which occurs during June. This next occurs on 5 June 2008.

    What does Matariki mean?
Matariki has two meanings, both referring to a tiny constellation of stars; Mata Riki (Tiny Eyes) and Mata Ariki (Eyes of God).

    Why is Matariki important?
Traditionally, depending on the visibility of Matariki, the coming season's crop was thought to be determined. The brighter the stars indicated the warmer the season would be and thus a more productive crop. It was also seen as an important time for family to gather and reflect on the past and the future.

  15. Matariki is the Maori new year.
During matariki the maori get up at dawn to look at the stars and see what is going to happen in the year.

In the Māori language Matariki is both the name of the Pleiades star cluster and also of the season of its first rising in late May or early June—taken as the beginning of the new year.Similar words occur in most Polynesian languages, deriving from Proto-Polynesian mataliki, meaning minute, small, and the use of the term for the Pleiades constellation is also ancient and has been reconstructed to Eastern Oceanic.
I got this information from wikipedia.
